This is an artists edition multiple of two cassettes, each available for sale as a separate cassette. Recorded directly onto 'prison' clear plastic audiocassettes sealed without the small screws that enable the cassette to be dismantled. The tapes are housed in clear plastic boxes with original hand designed and typed covers.
Each cassette features one original mono recording of the rehearsals for the performance of the text piece "I am not imagining the sound of these words you are.' at the exhibition 'Din' at 195 Mare Street, Hackney, London.
The rehearsals were simultaneously recorded on two portable mono cassette recorders which is reflected in the quality of the sound.
Each tape has two sides; side ('r') for the rehearsal and and side ('p') for the performance at Mare Street.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to illness, the Mare Street performance did not take place, so the 'p' side is unintentionally blank.

about

A ‘live’ diptych recording of rehearsals for a performed variation of the text piece: 'I am not imaging the sound of these words you are.' The original work, for typewriter, Tipp-Ex and proofing paper, was shortlisted for Imaginary Sound of the Year, in the Sound of the Year Awards 2022.

In September 2023 a variation of the piece was to be performed as part of the exhibition Din at 195 Mare Street in Hackney, London. Built in 1697, 195 Mare Street is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Hackney and was once home to the Elizabeth Fry’s Society Refuge for women leaving prison. The Quaker and reformer Elizabeth Fry played a significant role in prison reform and between 1860 and 1913, Mare Street provided refuge for thousands of young women recently released from prison.

In keeping with Mare Street’s historical association with Elizabeth Fry, penal reform and refuge, the performed Variation for Cassette and an Empty House, was to occur in isolation, behind the gently closed-to door of a small front room of Mare Street.

The brief performance was to be simultaneously recorded and duplicated via a pair of obsolete portable cassette recorders. Recorded on two C15 ‘prison’ audiocassettes – clear plastic cassettes sealed without the small screws that enable the cassette to be dismantled - the performance would be immediately released as a limited-edition multiple of two.

Sadly, the day before the exhibition opened, I became ill and was not able to perform the piece. But I decided that a record of my not performing should still be available. So, I released the cassette as a diptych multiple: on side ‘r’ of the cassettes are the recorded rehearsals for the performance, and on side ‘p’, is the blank ferrous record of a sound that never took place.

In addition to the physical multiple of the Cassette Diptych edition, an original performance of the rehearsal tape recordings for Mare Steet is available here as a digital download.

As a visual artist working in sound, Sebastiane Hegarty's creative practice explores the relationship between time, place and sensation. Most recently this work has focused on the materiality of sound and haunted geographies of the audible and unheard, realised through field recording, composition, performed phonographic objects, failed actions, and lost radio transmissions. ... more
